Event #1 / Thanksgiving of Sound

Thanksgiving Of Sound

Diet Event #1.

We like the word Diet because it means “way of life” and “assembly”—not just “restrictive meal.”

But we wanted to play off this association by having the first Diet event be a meal.

We called it Thanksgiving of Sound: a traditional American dinner where audio courses were presented on equal footing with food. An oral and aural pairing.

(TOS video, semi-still lives-Tableaux Vivants & 15 teaser, audio files, car/music videos into one, love letters, menu-with chef credit, others?)

Tableaux Vivantes (also called Diet TVs) are semi-still lives that present devices and ingredients from Thanksgiving of Sound in carefully staged settings intended to capture the spirit of each course.  A virtual meal for non-attendees.

Four different cassette tapes were on offer for the Walkman course. Listen below /

One of the devices at the Kids' Table was a Playskool tapedeck, used to record guests’ answers to the question, “What is your favorite sound?" Listen below /

An “endless" 3 minute loop cassette played in the bathrooms at both dinners. It cycled between Charles Bukowski’s thoughts on solitude, Son House’s description of "the B-L-U-S-E," and a Noël Coward monologue about misery, performed by the actress Celia Johnson, in the film "Brief Encounter."  Listen below /
